France

Vous parlez français?

French is the first language of about 72 million people, and about 25 countries including France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada (mainly Quebec).

One of the Romance Languages, French was originally called Latin and introduced to France when Julius Caesar invaded and conquered the area. After the Roman Empire fell, France was invaded by Germanic tribes (Franks). Although these tribes brought their own language to the territory, this did not displace the local dialects derived from Latin.

The numerous regional dialects were eventually pushed aside by Francien, the dialect of Paris, at the time of the French Revolution when a law passed forcing everyone in France to speak one language, French. To help retain the "purity" of the French language, such bodies as the "Acadamie Francaise" were created to ensure that the French language would not become "infected" by English words.

French grammar has been greatly simplified from Latin. Nouns do not have cases, and masculine and feminine genders are marked not in the noun, but in its article or adjective. The verb is conjugated for three persons and for singular and plural; though spelled differently, several of these forms are pronounced identically.

So, why should you learn French?

French is widely spoken in 43 countries on five continents and is the native tongue of approximately 200 million people. French is one of the principal languages of diplomacy, international organizations and businesses. Knowledge of the French language and culture will open doors to career opportunities in many fields, including medicine, environment, alternative energy, engineering, science and technology.

French is the second most widely learned foreign language, and it is the only language aside from English that is taught in every country of the world. An ability to speak French and English is an advantage on the international job market. Knowledge of the French language increases your ability to communicate effectively with business partners all over the world. As the world's fifth biggest economy and number-three destination for foreign investment, France is a key economic partner. Being well versed in French opens doors to work with French companies in France and other French-speaking parts of the world (Canada, Switzerland, Belgium, and North and sub-Saharan Africa), as well as with the many dynamic French corporations located in the United States.

Be Bilingual offers conversational French private lessons and semi-private lessons, as well as corporate group classes. Please call 713-789¬6338 or email us at languages@bebilingual.com for more information or to schedule lessons.

I really enjoyed the group Spanish lessons. It was a great way to learn a new language and interact with other people. It gave us the opportunity to learn as we helped each other out as well!

The book was easy to follow and good for individuals or groups. The instructor was great and made the class fun! I looked forward to my classes each week! It is a very professional organization and I highly recommend the (Corporate) group lessons!
